Seven seconds in a dark room in a two-and-a-half-hour witch movie, and it is the calmest she looks in the entire film, which should worry you.
What happens in Suspiria
Susie Bannion is an American girl from a Mennonite family in Ohio who talks her way into a Berlin dance academy in 1977 and rises to lead dancer in record time. The teachers are a coven, and they have plans for her. Near the end, shortly before the sabbath, she stands in her room, lets her dress slide off and stands there with her back to us before turning in the half-light. It is brief, it is dark and it is her.
What comes next is the sabbath, a blood-soaked finale full of nudity, prosthetics and dancers being torn apart, and I have left all of that out: much of the skin in it is prosthetic make-up, and the scene is horror, not romance. This short moment is the only real nude scene she has in the film, and Guadagnino frames it like the calm before the storm it is.
It is number eight on the Dakota Johnson hub, there because it is real, it is hers and it is from the most interesting film she has made. For the franchise that made her famous, start with the Fifty Shades of Grey Red Room scenes, or for something gentler, her first time with Christian.
