What happens in Fifty Shades of Grey
It starts sweet. Ana drops her robe and climbs into the tub with Christian, and for a minute they are just two people in hot water talking. Then they get out, and Christian takes his grey tie, binds her wrists and lays her down on the bed. It is the first time he shows her, gently, what he has been talking about for half the movie.
The bath is all warm light and soft focus, and the tie scene is the first real hint of the Red Room, played slowly enough that you can watch Ana weighing it up. Johnson makes the choice visible: she is nervous, then curious, then clearly enjoying herself. It is consensual and it is a turning point, and the movie knows it.
It is number six on my Dakota Johnson list. What comes before it is her first time with Christian, and the tie gets a lot more company in the ice cube scene.
