What happens in Fifty Shades of Grey

By this point Anastasia Steele has read the contract, argued over the clauses like a lawyer and agreed to try things his way. The Red Room is where Christian Grey keeps his ropes, his cuffs and his rack of instruments, and the first clip is her first proper session in it: her wrists bound above her head, Christian taking his time behind her while she decides whether she likes this. She does.

The second clip is the one everyone remembers. She is tied to the bed by her wrists and ankles, blindfolded, and he works his way up her body with a flogger. Johnson said afterwards that shooting it was sweaty, hot in the wrong way and “emotionally taxing”, and that they did it again and again for hours. None of that is on screen. What is on screen is a woman discovering she can hand over control and still be the most powerful person in the room. It is all consensual, all negotiated, and the reason the movie made a fortune.
