What happens in Fifty Shades of Grey
Christian has just finished explaining that he doesn’t do romance: he does contracts, rules and a room full of restraints. Then Ana tells him she is a virgin. The paperwork goes on hold and, for once, the billionaire does something the old-fashioned way. There is no Red Room in this one, just his bedroom, a slow undressing and a lot of nervous eye contact.
Sam Taylor-Johnson shoots it long and dark and close. Johnson plays Ana as scared, curious and very much in charge of the pace, and when the moment arrives it is her reaction the camera cares about, not his abs. It is the most tender scene in three films, which is funny when you remember what the marketing department was selling.
