Most nude scenes are about being looked at; these are about a woman who has stopped caring whether anyone is looking, which is far more unsettling and, God help me, far more magnetic.
What happens in these scenes
Grace is a new mother who can’t sleep and a wife whose husband is always somewhere else. The house becomes the whole world. In this run of scenes she drifts through it in her underwear, stands naked at a window in the afternoon light, prowls across the bed on all fours and wanders the hall at night in a thin nightdress. There’s a moment where she drags a pen across the wall like she’s trying to write her way out.
Ramsay shoots all of it without a hint of glamour, which is the point. Lawrence said she didn’t care about nudity on this one and wanted Ramsay “to have total freedom artistically.” When the editors offered to smooth a close-up of cellulite, she said no. You’re looking at a real body in a real crisis, and it’s better filmmaking for it.
