What happens in No Hard Feelings
Maddie is broke, her car has been repossessed, and she answers a Craigslist ad from a rich couple who want someone to date their painfully shy 19-year-old son, Percy, before he leaves for college. The prize is a Buick. Her seduction plan is subtle as a car alarm. One night on the beach she strips for a skinny-dip, Percy follows with the enthusiasm of a man walking to his own execution, and a gang of kids runs off with their clothes.
Our clip stops before the fight. The thieves are teenagers, and teenagers are not something we put on this page, so what you get is Maddie peeling off her dress while Percy studies the horizon, then Maddie walking out of the water alone, soaked and furious. Stupnitsky shot the swim from the neck up so you’d think the movie was going to be polite. It isn’t.
She told Variety she “didn’t even have a second thought” about the scene, and it shows. Nudity is usually lit like a perfume ad. Here it’s slapstick with a body count, and it’s funnier because she commits.
