Before mother! turns into the most unhinged studio film of its decade, it spends a quiet half hour following a young wife around a big old house in a white slip, and it’s the calm before a very nasty storm.
What happens in mother!
She has no name. She’s restoring the country house of her husband, a famous poet known only as Him (Javier Bardem), who has writer’s block and a weakness for guests. In the early scenes she pads barefoot from room to room, painting walls and listening to the house breathe, in a thin nightgown that the morning light goes straight through. Then the strangers start arriving and never stop.
The film’s actual nude moments come from its violent final act, when a mob beats her and tears at her clothes, and they’re not on this site. The see-through first act is. It’s tasteful, it’s hers and it’s the last time the film lets her be at peace.
