I’ll be straight with you: this is not a sexy scene, it’s a power struggle staged with a naked woman at the center of it, and the reason it’s on this list is that she wins.
What happens in the classroom
At the state school, Matron (Charlotte Rampling) teaches recruits that their bodies belong to the state. After a classmate attacks Dominika in the showers and she beats him bloody, Matron makes an example of her: in front of the whole class, she orders Dominika to undress and give him what he wanted. Dominika strips, lies down on the table and tells him to go ahead. He can’t. She has turned a punishment into his humiliation, and the room knows it.
The shower attack itself is an attempted rape and is not on this site. What we show here is the classroom only: the order, the undressing, the stare-down. Nobody touches her. It’s coercion, and the film means it to feel like coercion, but the scene belongs to Dominika.
Lawrence said she tried to make the film without nudity and changed her mind because it wouldn’t be right to put the character through something she wasn’t willing to go through herself.
