In a film where every kiss is tradecraft and every bedroom has a microphone in it, the one scene that feels like two people actually wanting each other is the one worth your time.
What happens in Red Sparrow
Dominika Egorova was a Bolshoi ballerina until a broken leg ended her career. Her uncle, a senior man in Russian intelligence, gives her a choice that isn’t one, and she ends up at a state school that trains young agents to use their bodies as weapons. Her first real assignment is Nate Nash, a CIA officer in Budapest. She is supposed to get close to him. She does. The question the whole film asks is whether she means it.
This is the scene where the answer seems to be yes. It’s dark, amber and unhurried, shot like a secret, and it lands harder because nearly everything else in Dominika’s life is a performance for someone.
Lawrence told Vanity Fair the film “scared the hell out of” her because of the nudity, and that doing it anyway gave her “something back that was taken from me.” You’ll find the rest of that story on the Jennifer Lawrence hub.
