Lynne Ramsay doesn’t film sex the way Hollywood does, with candles and a saxophone somewhere in the next room; she films it the way it actually feels at the start of something, which is hungry, clumsy and a little dangerous.
What happens in Die My Love
Grace and Jackson leave the city for a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, the kind of place where the nearest neighbor is a rumor. They christen the new house on the floor, on their knees, like two animals who have just discovered they share a language. Then a baby arrives, the walls start closing in, and the film becomes a portrait of a woman coming apart while the man she loves keeps missing it.
The clip is two moments of the two of them together: the famous floor scene and a later, quieter one lit in that sick aquarium green Ramsay uses whenever the house is winning. Lawrence was pregnant during the shoot and has said she felt “really safe with Rob.” You can tell. Nobody here is performing for a trailer.
