Anthony Minghella makes you wait two and a half hours and an entire civil war for this scene, and then he makes it count.
What happens in Cold Mountain
Ada Monroe is a preacher’s daughter from Charleston who ends up alone on a North Carolina farm when the Civil War takes the men away. The one she wants, W.P. Inman, has barely kissed her before he leaves. He spends the film walking home from the war as a deserter, and she spends it learning to survive, writing him letters and waiting.
When they finally find each other near the end, they spend one night together in an old camp in the woods. It is tender, then hungry, lit mostly by the fire, and it is the only time the film lets either of them be happy. You know that can’t last, and it doesn’t; the epilogue reveals that the night gave Ada a daughter.
