What happens in Hemingway & Gellhorn
Gellhorn meets Hemingway in a Key West bar in 1936, a young journalist and the most famous writer alive, both of them already a little in love with themselves. A year later they are covering the Spanish Civil War from the same Madrid hotel. She has been turning him down. Then a bombing raid traps them alone in the same room, the whole building shakes, and nobody turns anybody down.
The first clip is that night: his hands, her robe, the whole building shaking, and a view of her lying on her stomach afterward. The second is quieter, the two of them under the sheets later on, talking and teasing. Kidman told W magazine she kept asking Philip Kaufman whether all the sex was really necessary for the story. Her own conclusion: “these were two people who could make love when a building was falling down around them.”
