What happens in The Paperboy
Charlotte Bless is a big-haired Florida woman who writes love letters to men on death row, and the one she has picked is Hillary Van Wetter, a swamp-country alligator hunter convicted of killing a sheriff. When two reporter brothers start digging into his case, Charlotte comes along, sweating through her dresses in the summer of 1969 and making Zac Efron’s paperboy lose his mind.
When she finally gets Hillary alone, it happens against and on top of a washing machine in a hot little house, with her in a black bra and nothing gentle about any of it: kissing, grabbing, a break so she can check her makeup while he drinks, and then back to it. Kidman said shooting it was “horrifying but at the same time, it was great.” Know going in that Hillary gets worse as the film goes on; this is the moment she still thinks she has won.
