What happens in Babygirl

Once Romy has found out what she wants with Samuel, going home to Jacob gets harder. In the first clip he tries everything he knows, and she tells him she would rather watch porn. She puts a pillow over her own head and tells him to touch her. He tries, stops, and she throws the pillow away in fury; what follows is sex she is barely present for. It is the saddest scene in the film and Kidman makes you feel it without asking for sympathy.

The second clip is the film’s last bedroom scene, after everything has come out. Jacob is behind her, doing what she has finally been able to ask for, and the camera stays on her face all the way. At the end she looks straight into the lens and smiles. Halina Reijn couldn’t have picked a better last word.
