The internet decided the milk was the scene, and the internet was half right: the milk is the joke, and what comes after it is the reason the film exists.
What happens in Babygirl
Samuel’s first move, long before any hotel, is to send Romy a glass of milk at a bar after a work event. Later, in the hotel room, there is a saucer of it on the carpet, and the chief executive of a robotics company gets down on her hands and knees and drinks it. He licks the last of it off her face. Then George Michael’s “Father Figure” comes on, they dance, her in a hotel bathrobe, and the film stops pretending this is only a game.
The sex that follows is the first time we see Romy actually present in her own body. Reijn shoots it close and warm, all faces and skin, and Kidman lets you watch a woman be surprised by herself. The second clip is shorter and colder: the office, a closed door, Samuel giving instructions in a low voice and Romy repeating them back to him while the company carries on outside.
