What happens in Eyes Wide Shut
Bill and Alice Harford are a rich Manhattan doctor and his wife, back from a Christmas party where both of them flirted with strangers. The following evening she is standing naked at the mirror while he comes up behind her and kisses her neck. Chris Isaak’s “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” is on the stereo. He is absorbed in her. She is looking over his shoulder at her own reflection, and at us, with an expression nobody has fully decoded in twenty-seven years.
That look is the movie. Soon afterwards, stoned in the bedroom, she tells him she once nearly left him for a naval officer she only glimpsed on a summer holiday, and he spends the rest of the film wandering New York trying to get even. Kubrick wanted full-frontal nudity; she agreed on the condition that he show her every nude scene before it went into the film. By her own account she didn’t say no to any of it.
