She’s played an empress, a hotel chambermaid, a wife facing a frightening diagnosis and, this month on Netflix, the maid who teaches Lizzie Borden everything a well-bred New England daughter was never supposed to learn. Why Now: Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story
On September 17, 2026, Netflix dropped all eight episodes of Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the fourth season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology, and it opened at number one worldwide with 12.1 million views in four days, per Variety. Critics were lukewarm (39% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Krieps plays Bridget “Maggie” Sullivan, the Bordens’ Irish maid, who arrives in Fall River and, as LADbible put it, introduces Lizzie (Ella Beatty) to “culture, hair dye and sex toys.” Brennan told TV Insider she’s “like a foreign object that gets introduced to this ecosystem, and completely turns it on its head.” Krieps told Vanity Fair that Murphy pitched the season as “women-driven, feminist, lesbian, dirty, unapologetic.” Beatty’s verdict on her scene partner: “We just loved each other immediately.”
One honest footnote: there’s no documented evidence that the real Bridget and Lizzie were lovers. Television invented the romance.
The Woman Who Keeps Choosing the Harder Film
She was born on October 4, 1983, in Hesperange, Luxembourg, to a Luxembourgish father and a German mother. Her grandfather Robert Krieps was in the Resistance and later became a government minister. She moved to Berlin in her early twenties and spent years carrying small German films like The Chambermaid Lynn before Paul Thomas Anderson cast her opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread. After the shoot, the two of them made a pact to shave their heads. He did. She got around to it years later, for Love Me Tender.
Since then she’s worked like someone paying off a bet. Das Boot won her a Deutscher Fernsehpreis. Corsage, which she also executive produced, brought a performance prize at Cannes and the European Film Award, despite a corset she admits nearly gave her a panic attack on day one. Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother took the Golden Lion.
On the nude scenes she’s refreshingly unsentimental. Preparing the love scenes for Love Me Tender, she told herself, “it’s just skin, and that’s just another person.” The romantic in me would like to point out that in 2025 she married Lazaros Gounaridis, a Greek production assistant she met on the set of Hot Milk.
What’s Next: A Birthday, Diamond and The Joy of Sex
She turns 43 on October 4, with the Monster wave still breaking. Diamond, Andy Garcia’s noir, in which she plays Sharon Cobbs, a wealthy widow who hires his detective, premiered at Cannes in May, and Sony Pictures Classics picked it up in July. She’s also shooting the Ocean’s Eleven prequel with Margot Robbie and a comedy called The Joy of Sex with Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Laura Linney and David Tennant. She signed on to that one, she told Dazed, because “people are going backwards, and becoming more and more repressed.” She took The Joy of Sex as a public service. I’d follow her into battle.
