A woman who cleans hotel rooms that nobody is staying in, hides under strangers’ beds and then books a dominatrix to find out what she heard. It’s a German art film, and it’s also, somehow, a love story.

What happens in The Chambermaid Lynn

Ingo Haeb adapted Markus Orths’ novel. Lynn is a hotel maid with a gift for cleaning and no gift for people. She snoops through guests’ things, and one day she hides under a bed and listens to a session between a dominatrix, Chiara (Lena Lauzemis), and her client. Lynn copies down Chiara’s number and books an appointment of her own.

The main scene is that appointment. Over a drink, Lynn confesses she was the one under the bed. Things get rough before they get tender, and then the two women have sex in a long, fully nude scene. For someone who lives her working life in other people’s rooms, it’s the first one she’s been invited into. As the sessions go on, she loosens up, and it’s lovely to watch a buttoned-up person come undone on her own terms. Two shorter moments, Lynn changing and Lynn walking in naked with her back to the camera, fill out the page.

Filming ran from August to September 2013, when she was 29. It won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Montreal World Film Festival, and Variety compared it to Secretary and Blue Is the Warmest Colour. It’s fifth on the ranked guide to Vicky Krieps on screen. Two years earlier she’d played a mathematician’s wife in the Measuring the World bedroom scene.
