What happens in Went Up the Hill

Samuel Van Grinsven’s film sends Jack (Dacre Montgomery) back to New Zealand for the funeral of the birth mother he was taken from as a child. There he meets her widow, Jill, for the first time. Then the dead woman comes back and starts speaking through both of them.

The scene comes about ten minutes in, before any of that. Jill is alone in the shower, reaching around to her back, and she turns toward a noise she can’t place. It’s brief and quiet, shot mostly from behind with a glimpse as she turns, and it does two jobs at once: it shows you a woman whose life has gone silent, and it tells you the silence is about to be interrupted.

We stop there on purpose. A later sex scene happens while the characters are possessed, and consent doesn’t survive that premise, so it isn’t on this site. Krieps wrote and sang the song over the closing credits, “Jill,” then performed it live at the Toronto premiere.
