Every summer has one stranger who rearranges your life. In Hot Milk, that stranger is Vicky Krieps, and she does a lot of rearranging.
What happens in Hot Milk
Rebecca Lenkiewicz adapted Deborah Levy’s novel. Sofia (Emma Mackey) has put her anthropology studies on hold to take her mother, Rose (Fiona Shaw), to Almería, where a healer named Dr. Gómez promises to fix whatever keeps Rose in a wheelchair. Sofia has spent her whole life as a caretaker. Then she meets Ingrid, a free-spirited German traveler, and the caretaking starts to slip.
The scene is the two of them in a shower together, then tangled up on a picnic blanket, then talking in bed. Both actors are topless at points along the way, and it’s the rare love scene where the conversation afterward is as intimate as what came before it. Lenkiewicz has said she was always conscious of the male gaze in beach and love scenes and wanted something raw and chaotic rather than glossy.
It was shot in Greece in the summer of 2023, when Krieps was 39. Off camera, it’s where she met Lazaros Gounaridis, who was working on the production; they married in Chalkidiki in May 2025. The critics shrugged, but for her it was quite a shoot. It ranks fourth on the Vicky Krieps hub. She went further into the same territory, with a far less forgiving ex-husband, in Love Me Tender.
