What happens in the dovecote
Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty) lives under her stepmother’s thumb in Fall River, Massachusetts, until a new Irish maid arrives. Bridget prefers to be called Maggie, and Krieps plays her like a storm front. Lizzie is fascinated from the first minute. Maggie tells her the story of Elizabeth Báthory, the countess who bathed in blood to stay young, and Lizzie decides to stage her own version. She fills a tub with cherry juice, sets it in the dovecote, and the two of them climb in, in their underwear, with Kate Bush’s “Hounds of Love” playing. “If only this were blood,” Maggie says. Reader, it’s a Ryan Murphy show.
There’s no nudity here. What’s there is two actors with real chemistry. In the next episode, among the cherry blossoms, they kiss, and Maggie offers, “Maybe I should be your beau.” Beatty told Collider they “loved each other right away” and called Krieps “fierce and also spontaneous, playful, and fun,” and you can see it on screen.
Historically, Lizzie Borden was 32 that year, and there’s no record of any romance with her maid. The show invents that part and commits to it.
