Most romantic comedies spend an hour working up to the first kiss. Love & Other Drugs gets it over with in the first act, against a kitchen counter, and then has the decency to make it funny.
What happens on the first nights
Jamie gets Maggie’s number the way Jamie gets everything, by charming a receptionist, and their first date skips most of the date part. The first clip is slapstick lust: kissing across her kitchen, shirts gone, furniture in danger, and the two of them ending up flat on the floorboards in their underwear, pleased with themselves and slightly winded.
The second is the movie’s best sight gag. Maggie turns up at Jamie’s apartment, opens her red coat and crosses the room topless, straight past Josh (Josh Gad), Jamie’s freeloading brother, who is lying on the couch and having the best day of his life. She’s mortified for about a second. Then she’s Maggie again.
Neither is the long, famous one; that’s the bedroom scene with Jake Gyllenhaal. But this is where the chemistry starts, and it has its own spot in the complete Anne Hathaway nude scene guide.
