Everyone remembers the tent. Fewer remember that Jack Twist also had a wife, and that Ang Lee gave her one scene in the back of a car that tells you everything about that marriage.
What happens in Brokeback Mountain
Hathaway plays Lureen Newsome, a Texas rodeo rider and the daughter of a rich farm-machinery dealer, who meets Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) after he gives up on Wyoming. Their courtship gets one scene. It’s dark, it’s cramped, it’s the back seat of a car, and her rodeo jacket does most of the talking until it doesn’t.
The nudity lasts a few seconds and the lighting is borderline hostile, so we’ve brightened the stills enough to see who’s in them. What matters is the faces: Jack looking like a man doing what’s expected of him, and Lureen looking like a woman getting exactly what she came for. It’s a small, sharp scene in a film full of them.
It was also the pair’s first sex scene together. Gyllenhaal said he “had to sort of resist it” that time, he told HollywoodLife, and that five years later, in the Love & Other Drugs bedroom scene, he could “go for it.” Ang Lee’s film won the Golden Lion at Venice and three Oscars; this is its least famous minute and still a must on Anne Hathaway’s nude scenes, ranked from best down.
