What happens in the bedroom
Hathaway plays Maggie Murdock, a sharp, funny woman in 1990s Pittsburgh who has early-onset Parkinson’s and zero interest in being anybody’s project. Jake Gyllenhaal is Jamie Randall, a pharmaceutical rep with a Pfizer bag and the moral compass of a golden retriever. They agree it’s just sex. The movie spends two hours proving otherwise.
This is the proof. The two of them lie tangled on dark sheets, naked and giggling like they’ve gotten away with something, then she rolls on top of him and the talking stops. It’s playful before it’s hot and hot before it’s sad, and it sits at the top of every Anne Hathaway nude scene, ranked because it’s the one where you believe these two actually like each other. The red-sheet mornings in Maggie’s loft are where that feeling quietly turns into love.
She knew exactly what she’d signed up for. “It’s racy – very racy,” she told Fox News at the premiere, adding that undressing in front of a crew is “intensely mortifying” and also just part of the job. Her lesson from the shoot, as she told Entertainment Weekly: “Don’t trust the director when he says ‘Trust me’ and ‘nudity’ in the same sentence!”
