What happens in Maggie’s loft
Maggie lives in a warehouse loft full of clutter, art supplies and one big bed made up in red, which is where the movie does its best acting. The first clip starts wide, the whole messy apartment with two bodies in the middle of it, then moves in close: her hair everywhere, his grin, a long exhale and a lot of laughing in between the actual business.
The second is shorter and moodier. The camera finds them through a rain-streaked window, then cuts inside for close-ups of her face that say more than any line in the script. By now the “just sex” deal from their first night on her floor is clearly a lie both of them are telling out of politeness.
Gyllenhaal said that when he first saw the film he had “never seen Anne Hathaway look so beautiful,” he told Cosmopolitan, and called her “incredibly shy but” also “an incredibly sexy person.” Fair on both counts.
