Two women asleep under a mustard-yellow blanket, one of them waking up with ideas. Cooper Raiff’s Hal & Harper is a family drama about grief and growing up, and then, for two minutes, it isn’t.
What happens in the bedroom
Reinhart plays Harper, one of two siblings raised by a single dad (Mark Ruffalo). Raiff wrote, directed and plays her brother Hal. Alyah Chanelle Scott plays Jesse, Harper’s longtime girlfriend, and this scene is the two of them on a morning when nobody has anywhere to be.
It starts wide and sleepy: two bodies, one yellow blanket, pale green light through the curtains. Then Harper rolls over and the scene gets close. She leans in, she’s on top in a white tank, and then a white bralette as the tank goes, and eventually Jesse flips the arrangement and Harper’s face does the rest of the acting. There’s no nudity. There’s also no rush, which is rarer on television. Two minutes and change of two people who like each other, shot by someone who’s in no hurry to cut away.
It’s our number two in our ranking of Lili Reinhart’s sexiest scenes, and it’s the most tender thing on the list. Three episodes later Harper is on the other end of a very different kiss: the Hal & Harper scene with Addison Timlin, which is all nerves and no blanket. Reinhart won Best Actress at Series Mania for this show, and scenes like this one are why.
