What happens in Measuring the World
Detlev Buck’s film adapts Daniel Kehlmann’s novel, part fact and part invention, about two giants of German science: the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss (Florian David Fitz), who conquers the world without leaving his desk, and the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt (Albrecht Schuch), who tramps across it measuring everything he finds. It was shot in 3D, and Warner Bros. released it in October 2012.
Krieps plays Johanna, the adult Gauss’s wife. Her big scene is in the bedroom: she’s topless, and it’s a sex scene with her husband. In a film that’s mostly about two men with numbers and maps, it’s a reminder that one of them went home to somebody.
She shot it between October 2011 and January 2012, at 28, several years before Phantom Thread made her a name outside Germany. It’s sixth on our Vicky Krieps countdown, and it’s the earliest scene on the page. Two years later she’d carry a whole film as a hotel maid in The Chambermaid Lynn.
