Most films treat consent like paperwork you finish before the fun starts. Love Me Tender makes it the fun, and Vicky Krieps shaved her head for the privilege.
What happens in Love Me Tender
Anna Cazenave Cambet adapted Constance Debré’s 2020 novel. Clémence has been separated from her husband Laurent for years, and they share their son Paul without drama, until she tells Laurent she’s attracted to women and has started seeing Sarah (Monia Chokri). After that, the custody arrangement turns into a war. Meanwhile Clémence walks away from her career as a lawyer to write.
The two scenes here are the relationship at its best. One is in bed, frank and unhurried. The other is a skinny-dip in a lake that turns hands-on fast. Cambet told Eye For Film she wanted to show “how consent can be sexy. Clémence is always asking the other woman if it’s okay, and vice versa.” That’s the film’s whole philosophy of sex: two people checking in, with the checking in doing half the work.
Krieps has been disarmingly honest about the prep. “I’m not a lesbian. How do I know how to kiss a breast, or touch it, if I haven’t done it before,” she told Dazed.
