It starts with somebody crying and ends with somebody against a wall. In the first half of the Hal & Harper finale, Harper and her co-worker Audrey stop pretending they’re just co-workers.
What happens in the kiss
Addison Timlin plays Audrey, Harper’s co-worker (she’s also one of the show’s executive producers). The episode is “Are You Watching? Part 1,” the first half of the show’s two-part finale, and the scene is played almost entirely in close-up.
Audrey is red-eyed in a striped shirt; Harper, hair scraped back in a black suit and white shirt, looks at her like she’s doing math she doesn’t like the answer to. Then they kiss, and it doesn’t stop where either of them planned. Close-ups, breath, a hand on a jaw, a white wall that suddenly matters. It’s all faces, no nudity, and it’s more charged than most sex scenes because nobody in it seems sure they should be doing it.
If her bed scene with Jesse is the comfortable version of love, this is the vertigo version. It sits fourth among Lili Reinhart’s steamiest scenes, ranked, but it might be the best piece of acting on the page. Raiff told Collider he “just burst into tears” watching her very first scene on the show, and nothing here suggests he was exaggerating. Watch her face in the first ten seconds and you’ll get it. Then go back and watch the whole season; it streams on Mubi in the U.S., and it earns this moment.
