What happens in the kiss
Season six opened with Rivervale, a five-episode detour into a spookier alternate version of the town, and “Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Witching Hour(s)” goes further, back to 1957. Madelaine Petsch plays Poppy Blossom, who hosts salons for the town’s housewives and hands out herbal remedies for their marriages. Reinhart plays Bitsy, a 1950s spin on Betty: a wife and mother whose husband, Jack (Cole Sprouse), wants another baby she doesn’t want.
Poppy slips her some ginger root as birth control. Bitsy, overwhelmed that somebody finally took her side, looks at her for a long beat and then kisses her, hands on Poppy’s face, no hesitation at all. The hesitation arrives a second later, all at once, and you can watch it land on her face as she pulls away. It’s fifteen seconds, fully clothed, and it carries the whole episode: Jack finds out, Poppy pays for it, and Bitsy has to stand next to her husband and pretend it meant nothing.
We skip the high-school years of Riverdale entirely; this is the grown-up era of the show, and Bitsy is a grown woman with a marriage to escape. It’s the shortest clip in every Lili Reinhart scene we could verify, and one of the most honest. If you like her best when a kiss scares her a little, the Hal & Harper kiss with Addison Timlin is the modern version.
