What happens in From Scratch
Attica Locke and her sister Tembi built the series from Tembi’s memoir of love, Sicily and finding home. Saldaña plays Amy Wheeler, a law student who signs up for a six-week art course in Florence as one last adventure before Georgetown, and whose detour turns into a whole different life. She falls for Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), a chef from a small Sicilian town who teaches her that food can be art, and the show follows them from first dinners to a move to America his family resents and an illness nobody is ready for.
The love scene is as tender as that setup promises. Mr. Skin calls it “pretty tame” and notes she’s seen naked from behind; Plugged In reports “quite a bit of skin” with nothing critical shown. What sells it is that these two look like they’re genuinely falling, which is much harder to fake than the sex.
She was 42 and 43 during the shoot, April to August 2021, in Los Angeles, Florence and Cefalù, and she executive-produced it, with her sisters Mariel and Cisely among the producers. It scored 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned her an NAACP Image Award nomination.
