What happens in After Sex

Eric Amadio wrote and directed this small, chatty film on a budget estimated at $825,000: eight couples, each caught in the conversation that follows sex, running from the start of a relationship to the wreckage at the end of one. It premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival in September 2007 and reached American DVD through Anchor Bay the following February.

Saldaña’s Kat and Mila Kunis’s Nikki are college roommates in a casual arrangement that Nikki insists doesn’t make her a lesbian. Kat knows herself better. On a trip to the campus library, she admits that she really is gay and simply keeps it from her strict parents. The scene between them, about 35 minutes in, is sexy without any nudity, and what gives it weight is the imbalance: one woman who knows exactly who she is, and one who won’t say it aloud.

Nobody has pinned down exactly when it was shot, but it premiered when Saldaña was 29, two years before Star Trek and Avatar made her an entirely different kind of famous. Watching it now is like finding an early short story by a novelist you adore.
