A woman who spends eight hours a day staring at the worst of the internet goes home and tries to feel something, anything, that isn’t a screen. American Sweatshop is a thriller, but these are its most human minutes.
What happens in American Sweatshop
Reinhart plays Daisy Moriarty, a content moderator at a company called Paladin Control, which is a lovely name for a place that pays you to watch atrocities and click Remove. Quotas, a dictator of a manager, coworkers melting down at their desks. Daisy copes the way people cope: drugs, drink and sex, in roughly that order of reliability.
The two clips are those nights. In the first she’s kissing a guy on the edge of a bed, a phone lights up the dark like a bad conscience, and then they give in to a slow, sweaty tangle that ends with the two of them side by side, not quite looking at each other. The second is warmer and longer: amber light, his tattooed arm, hands tracing the strap of her bra, and afterward Daisy standing in black underwear in front of the mirror while he sits on the edge of the bed. There’s no nudity here. She keeps the bra on, and the camera keeps its manners.
We trimmed out the laptop screens. The movie’s engine is a violent video Daisy can’t unsee, and nobody needs it next to a love scene. What’s left is the most adult work in the full list of Lili Reinhart nude and sex scenes, a long way from Betty Cooper’s bedroom.
