Yorgos Lanthimos makes films in which people behave like very polite aliens, and Hunter Schafer turns up in exactly one scene of Kinds of Kindness. She makes it count, mostly by standing perfectly still.
What happens in R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich
Kinds of Kindness is three stories told by one cast. In the third, “R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich,” Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons play members of a cult searching for a woman who can bring the dead back to life. So they audition candidates. One of them is Anna, played by Schafer in what Wikipedia fairly calls a cameo.
The scene is shot like a hospital training video. Anna stands on a scale against a pale green wall in nothing but pink briefs, arms folded, then at her sides, while Stone’s Emily, in a rust-colored suit, checks her height, runs a tape measure around her and writes things down. Nobody explains what they’re measuring for, and Anna doesn’t ask. She fails the test, as it turns out, which is the only thing in this movie that makes complete sense.
It’s brief, but it tells you something about her taste, and it’s a dry run for Jules and Ellis in Euphoria’s final season, where a man with a clipboard mentality wraps her in plastic instead of a tape measure. Between Euphoria seasons she chose a horror lead in Cuckoo and one scene for the most particular director working today. The film premiered in competition at Cannes in May 2024, where Plemons won Best Actor, and it reached U.S. theaters that June. It’s also the only film scene among Hunter Schafer’s nude scenes, ranked. Blink and you’ll miss her. Don’t blink.
