Season three skipped ahead five years and gave Jules the strangest job on the show. Hunter Schafer’s big scene of the final season is a cold open about money, art and a man who wants to own both.
What happens in The Ballad of Paladin
Five years after high school, the episode opens with Jules at art college and broke, until her roommate Vivian introduces her to sugar dating. It beats retail. Soon she has a rotation of well-off men, and then she meets Ellis (Sam Trammell), a married plastic surgeon with a penthouse, a God complex and very particular tastes. She drops the other clients, then drops out of school. Decider called the episode “the King Ghidorah of trash” and meant it as a compliment.
What you see: Jules at the easel in her bright apartment, then a dark glass box of a penthouse at night. She lets her hair down and undresses while he studies her like a collector at an auction. Then her wrists go up, the plastic film comes out, and he wraps her, layer by layer, into a statue. “I just might keep you forever,” he tells her, per CableTV. It’s gorgeous and deeply creepy, which is Euphoria‘s favorite combination. She had already played a woman being studied like a specimen two years earlier, in the Kinds of Kindness measuring scene.
Two episodes later the arrangement is still going, and we get a short, candlelit scene of the two of them in bed, shot past a red poppy that stays politely out of focus. Schafer plays all of it with a watchful calm. Jules is never the victim of this story; she’s the one keeping the receipts. And in the finale she mourns Rue the only way she knows how, with a paintbrush. It’s the most grown-up entry in every Hunter Schafer nude scene worth watching.
