In “Chapter 5,” Zoe and Frank have moved from off the record to off the clothes. With her back to him, she slips off her underwear and stands there in an open sweater while he takes pictures on his phone. It’s a tease and a test at once. She’s handing him something, and she knows precisely what it’s worth, which is the whole character in one gesture.
Now the part I owe you. The bare backside in this scene is a body double, not Kate Mara; aznude titles the clip “Body Double Scene.” Mara’s face, timing and nerve are all over it. The skin belongs to a professional with a different job title.
She has been refreshingly plain about the season. “The whole cast signed nudity waivers… But every script I’d get, the nudity was only implied. I’d go, ‘Yes! I don’t have to do it!’ Then toward the very end, I moon viewers, for a second.” She said that to The Globe and Mail. Which second she meant, nobody has confirmed, and I refuse to pick a frame and call it hers. There’s a special circle of the internet for men who freeze-frame a stand-in and write a thesis. I’d rather not live there.
