What happens in House of Cards S1E9
Washington loves the word “access.” Politicians trade it, reporters beg for it, and entire careers are built on who returns whose calls. This is what access looks like once it stops being a metaphor. In “Chapter 9,” Zoe and Frank don’t make it to a bed, or out of their clothes. It’s sex against a wall, fast and fully dressed, the kind of encounter that happens because two people either can’t wait or have stopped pretending there’s anything to wait for. aznude files it under “Sexy,” and for once the label is accurate: there’s no nudity at all, hers or a double’s.
What I like about it is how it moves the story. All season Zoe has treated Frank as a source to be worked. By now you start to wonder who’s working whom, and whether she has noticed the wall is at her back. Mara plays her as someone who believes she’s winning, and the belief is half the tragedy of the character.
She was 28 and 29 during the 2012 shoot. It’s a short scene, and the right kind of short: nobody lingers, because nobody in this town ever has the time.
Call it romance, Beltway edition. Somebody always leaves with leverage.
