What happens in the Excision dream scenes
McCord plays Pauline, a disturbed, delusional high school student who wants to be a surgeon, stuck at home with a controlling, strongly Christian mother (Traci Lords) and a younger sister with cystic fibrosis (Ariel Winter). Awake, Pauline is greasy-haired and awkward. Asleep, she dreams in bright, staged tableaux of blood and bodies, and in those dreams she’s glamorous.
The nudity is in those dream sequences, which recur through the film: brief topless and rear shots, framed like fashion photographs and covered in fake blood. She wakes from them panting. It’s nudity as horror-art rather than seduction. The film premiered in Sundance’s Park City at Midnight section in 2012.
