From Yemanzhelinsk to the Swimsuit Issue
Born Irina Shaykhlislamova on January 6, 1986, in Yemanzhelinsk, in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region, she’s the daughter of a coal miner and a kindergarten music teacher. She played piano from age six and spent seven years in music school. Her father died when she was 14, and money got tight. She was at beauty school with her sister when a local agency spotted her, and in 2004 she won Miss Chelyabinsk.
In 2007 she replaced Ana Beatriz Barros as the face of Intimissimi and made her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut. The 2011 issue was her fifth, and the first time she made the cover. Glamour Spain named her Best International Model of 2010. She got her first Vogue cover in 2013, with Vogue Spain. She carried the placard for the Russian team at the 2014 Winter Olympics, became an international spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris in 2015, and walked the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show six months pregnant. Models.com later put her on its list of the New Supers.
The Screen Work
She starred in Kanye West’s “Power” video, directed by artist Marco Brambilla, in 2010. Hercules in 2014 was her film debut, and TV cameos came before and after: 90210, The Tudors, Shameless, a 2016 Inside Amy Schumer sketch and a model’s role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. She’s also a background extra in A Star Is Born, the 2018 film directed by Bradley Cooper, her partner from 2015 to 2019. Their daughter was born in March 2017.

It’s disputed. The December 2010 GQ Spain issue showed her nude. She said she hadn’t stripped and that the magazine had digitally removed her lingerie. GQ said 15 people had watched her pose nude. We don’t run those pictures, and we’re not picking a side.
