What happens in Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Two American friends spend a summer in Barcelona. Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is practical and engaged. Cristina (Johansson) thinks of herself as a free spirit who isn’t sure what she wants. A painter named Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) invites them both to Oviedo for the weekend in a small plane he flies himself, with intentions he doesn’t bother to hide. Cristina says yes almost at once and soon moves in with him.
Then his ex-wife, María Elena (Penélope Cruz), comes back into his house. After some early hostility the two women grow fond of each other, and the three become romantically involved. The famous moment is in a photo darkroom: Cristina and María Elena kiss and touch each other’s faces. Later, another darkroom scene brings Juan Antonio into the kiss. Mr. Skin summed it up as “too dark, too short, too non-nude,” which is fair and also slightly beside the point.
Shooting began in Barcelona on July 9, 2007, when she was 22, and Gaudí’s Park Güell turns up on screen. It was her third film with Allen, after Match Point and Scoop. Cruz won the Oscar and the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress, and the film took the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy.
It’s sixth on the Scarlett Johansson hub. Her first Allen film found its heat outdoors, in a rain-soaked wheat field.
