What happens in Match Point
Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Chris Wilton, a retired tennis pro who takes a job coaching at a posh London club and dates his way into a wealthy family. At a family gathering he meets Nola Rice, the American fiancée of his future brother-in-law, an aspiring actress, and the kind of trouble you can see coming from across a tennis court. They’re drawn to each other at once.
At the family’s country house, the matriarch condescendingly quizzes Nola about her struggling career, and Nola walks out into a thunderstorm. Chris follows, confesses how he feels, and they kiss and make love in the wheat field, fully clothed and completely drenched. It’s the start of an affair that turns very dark indeed.
Johansson’s own review, to TV Guide: “It was pretty miserable, actually,” with “movie rain that pelts you with this freezing cold water,” plus “a slight wheat allergy, so I had a swollen eye for a couple of days.” She added, “Jonathan bit my lip, busted it open. He sent me flowers the next day.” She also rejected the femme fatale label: “My character is confident and sexy, but I don’t think she goes into this relationship wanting to ruin this guy’s life.”
They shot in London over seven weeks in summer 2004, when she was 19. It’s fifth in the Scarlett Johansson scene guide. Three summers later, Allen took her to Spain for the Vicky Cristina Barcelona darkroom kiss.
