A destination wedding in Sydney and two people who swear they can’t stand each other. Anyone But You reminded Hollywood that rom-coms can make money, and this is the part where the hate-flirting ends.
What happens in Anyone But You
Sweeney plays Bea and Glen Powell plays Ben. They have one perfect date, one catastrophic misunderstanding and then a wedding in Australia where they fake being a couple to get everyone off their backs. You know exactly how this goes. That’s the point. The fun is the chemistry, and there was so much of it that the press tour spent months fielding questions about whether it was real.
This scene is the release valve: a kiss under the shower, the blue dress giving up, then a warm, tangled stretch in bed. It’s shot side-on and playful, with bare backs and a flash of breast rather than anything graphic, and it might be the most human sex scene in Sydney Sweeney’s entire nude filmography. Two people laughing between kisses. Imagine that.
Will Gluck directed it for Sony, it opened in December 2023, and it turned into a word-of-mouth hit. Nobody plans a rom-com revival. It happens because two good-looking people make you believe they’re in trouble. It made far more than anyone expected, and it made Powell and Sweeney the rare pair audiences actually wanted to see again. Two years later she traded the beach for a much darker bedroom in The Housemaid.
