A live-in maid, a rich husband, a wife who seems to be coming apart and a house full of locked doors. The Housemaid is an airport-novel thriller made with total conviction, and the love scene is the moment it stops being coy.
What happens in The Housemaid
Sweeney plays Millie Calloway, fresh out of prison and desperate enough to take a job cleaning for Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried), who is terrifying, and her husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), who is suspiciously nice. You’ve read the Freida McFadden book, or the person next to you on the plane has. You know what nice men in thrillers are for.
The clips are the payoff for an hour of loaded glances over laundry baskets. First the big one, in a dim bedroom with rain on the glass: urgent, sweaty and built from close-ups of hands and faces instead of wide shots, and it earns both the R rating and its place on the full list of Sydney Sweeney nude scenes. Then the montage, Andrew carrying her past a lit fireplace as they christen a house that’s about to become a trap.
Paul Feig admitted he was the nervous one. Intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot told him to treat the scenes “like they’re stunt scenes,” he told CinemaBlend, and said his two leads were completely comfortable. It shows. Next to her sex scene in The Voyeurs, it’s warmer and a lot less creepy.
